There are many different styles of counselling & psychotherapy. A helpful outline can be found at http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counselling.html
I work integratively with a foundation in the humanist spectrum of approaches.
An integrative counsellor recognises the potential fluidity of counselling practice, client need and changes in respect of their own continuing personal and professional development. An integrative counsellor will work with your personal experiences and apply the appropriate theory and technique to suit you therapeutically (because I recognise that what works with one client may not necessarily work with another).
Humanist Therapy focuses on self development, growth & responsibilities. I seek to help individuals recognise their creativity, strength & choices in the here & now.
Styles/models of humanist therapy that I work with include;
Person Centered Counselling- in brief this style focuses on an individuals self worth & values and helps an individual accept who they are & reconnect with themselves thorugh talking & reflecting.
Holistic (Whole Person) Therapy-this dynamic therapy focuses on the ‘whole’ of an individuals experience including thoughts, feelings & actions. Gaining self awareness in the ‘here & now’ is a key aspect.
Transactional Analysis (TA)-helps understand family patterns, ego states and learned responses.
Art Psychotherapy-helps understand & unblock subconcious trauma or thought patterns.
Written Psychotherapy-helps realise & face your fears.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-focuses on emotions, thoughts, physical feelings & actions, and teaches how one can quickly affect the other. Good for phobias, depression & anxiety.
Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)-helps ‘retrain our brain’ by helping people look at the way they use thoughts & language to inform their emotions. When used as a combination approach to trauma or depression it can be very useful.
Laughter Therapy-helps release trauma, fear, emotional blocks as well as generalised anxiety & depression.
Mindfulness Therapy-helps people change how they think, act & feel by supporting them to be fully present and relaxed in the ‘here and now’.
I’m also studying and working with Human Givens Therapy currently. Human Givens is an interesting model to utilise when working with clients with any number of emotional upheavals. Its a dynamic therapy that has the capacity to dissolve Trauma, Depression & Anxiety within a few well directed sessions.
I also utilise skills in Life Coaching to help clients realise & take control of their goals whilst removing blocks to achieving.
